Ryan Vickers, a professional British motorcycle racer, currently racing in the British Superbikes for OMG Racing UK, says the AiM Taipan Y V2 ECU, compared to the standard ECU on a Yamaha 450F, “felt amazing,” and he “couldn’t ask for more!”
The Taipan Y V2 ECU is the latest advancement in our line of aftermarket plug & play engine control units, exclusively designed for Yamaha off-road bikes. Built on a high-tech 32-bit core, this ECU enhances your bike's performance with unmatched consistency, ensuring a smooth and reliable ride even at extreme conditions. At 20,000 RPM the Taipan ECU guarantees a precision of 1/10 of degree: this means an accuracy within 0.8 µsec for turning the spark on, translating into more power at the wheel and repeatable, consistent results across multiple tests, making it the best dirt bike ECU on the market.
Here’s what Ryan had to say:
“I went out on the full power map coupled with full traction, and it was so good! The initial part of the throttle is definitely the biggest thing I noticed as it doesn’t drop off with the power depending on the RPMs like it did before, especially when going into corners - with the stock ECU it was hard to shift down to first gear, and I had to use a lot of the clutch in second or even third. It's the same thing with jumps it run out of RPMs on the face, whereas now with the Aim Taipan Y ECU it’s as smooth as possible. Now when it's in second gear it holds the RPMs perfectly and doesn’t stall as much when taking corners in third gear, whereas before I would barely hit any in third as the bike would bog out even if it was a fairly fast corner.” Ryan told us.
“Towards the third session using the Taipan Y V2 I started experimenting with some other maps. I tried two of the light maps (less power) and then tried the third map with full traction and I thought it was awesome - I loved that! However, I think where I am today, the full power and full traction map is best suited as most of the corners have either deep ruts or some sort of berms that are quite soft so you need the punch of power to dig in and come out of them. I can’t wait to try out the soft mapping at a hard-packed and dusty track, as even when trying it out here on some of the dry corners, it felt amazing and I really couldn’t ask for more! Even the braking feels ten times better as it’s a lot smoother and slows down more efficiently. I don’t feel as though I need to shift down heading into most corners, unlike before when I would shift down into second, often it would lock the back wheel up and I’d have to use a lot of clutch and control it with the back brake.”
We want to give a huge thank you to Tom Barrington at TB Racing for his incredible work in setting up all of the maps, calibrating the engine and running the dynamometer tests as they were a major part for our data analysis. We also want to express our gratitude to Ryan Vickers for taking the Taipan Y V2 out on his Yamaha 450F. His hands-on experience and valuable feedback are essential as we continue to refine our products.
